Embroider the eyes (C2)

Determine where to embroider the eyes. Start with one side and mark the placement with pins.

Thread your large eyed needle with yarn C2 (black, approx. 40cm/16″ long). You can use embroidery thread if you prefer more delicate, less chunky eyes.

Stitch through the same spots where you placed the pins, and remove them as you go.

Using 5 pins mark where you would like the eyelashes to sit. Stitch through where you placed your pins, forming one eyelash at a time. Remove pins as you emboider.

Stitch from the eye through to the black part of the beak and sew in the end. Cut it off as close to the beak as possible.

Pin through the eyelid at at least 4 points, so the pins come out at the other side of the head. This will help you to embroider the other eye symmetrically.

Using 2 pins mark the spots where the pins come thrugh from the other side. Repeat these steps to embroider the other eye.

Attach the legs

Start with the right (straight leg). Make sure that it is enough stuffed and add stuffing if necessary.

Pin the leg close to the bottom midde, right next to the magic circle. Double check if the foot is pointing forward and if it is in the desired position. Sew all around the leg twice to make sure it is firmly attached. Sew in the end by stitching through the leg a couple of time, following the weave. Break yarn as close to the leg as possible.

Next pin the left (bent) leg in place. First make sure it’s nicely stuffed and add more stuffing if necessary. Pin it close to the right leg. Make sure it’s in the desired position by looking at it from each side. Sew on the leg by stitching around it twice to make sure it’s firmly attached. Sew in the end and break yarn as you did with the other leg.

Attach the head

Add more stuffing to the neck if necessary. Attach it to the front of the body in the upper half, close to the bauble’s cap.

Make sure it aligns with the legs and the tail feathers.

Sew 2 rounds around the neck to ensure it’s firmly attached. Sew in the end on the neck, following the weave.

Break the yarn as short as possible.

Attach the wings

Pin one of the wings in place.  First sew 2/3 of the top side on from where the “shoulder” towards the tip.

Then lift the wing and stitch through the body to the bottom side of the wing.

Sew along the bottom side of the wing, back towards the “shoulder” to where you started.

Sew in end, break yarn. Repeat with the other wing.

Make the santa hat (optional)

If you’re making your crochet flamingo as an exotic addition to your Christmas decorations, you might wanna make her a festive Santa hat.

You need:

  • A small amount of red and white cotton yarn (DK/Light worsted weight)
  • 3.5mm/ E hook

Instructions:

Using white yarn ch 14

Rd 1: Join 1st ch in a sl st to form a circle, sc 14 (14) Break yarn, pull through, sew ends in.

Flip the circle around.

Rd 1: Using red yarn join the other side of the chain in a sc, sc 11 more forming a complete round (12)

Rd 2: [Sc 1, inv dec 1]*4 (8)

Rd 3: Sc 8 (8)

Rd 4: Sc 8 (8)

Rd 5: Inv dec 3 (leave the last 2 sts)

Break yarn, pull through, stitch end through tip of hat towards inside. Sew in other end.

Make the pom pom using white yarn: Ch 3

R 1: Sc 1 in 2nd from hook, sc 1

R 2: Ch 1, turn, sc 2 Break yarn, pull through, tie both ends together tightly to shape a pom pom.

Thread both ends onto one needle and stitch through tip of hat. Make a few knots and cut ends short.

You can sew the hat on the head if you want it there permanently, or pin it on with pins temporarily (please only if it’s not in reach of young children or pets).
