Amigurumi Cow – Free Crochet Pattern

This free crochet pattern for my amigurumi cow is a great project for intermediate as well as seasoned crocheters! If you’re not too keen on color changes, you could also crochet your cow in one color. There’s a 2 part video tutorial on my YouTube channel, in case you need visual guidance!

Materials for the amigurumi cow

DK/light worsted weight cotton yarn in white, brown/black and light pink  [I used Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK Champagne white (403), Coffee Bean (411) and Ballet Pink (453)]

2.5mm/size B or C crochet hook

6mm (0.16″) safety eyes or black embroidery floss/yarn

Fiberfill 

Yarn needle 

Large eyed sewing needle

Crochet the udder in light pink

Rd 1: Sc 6 in magic ring (6)

Rd 2: Inc 6 (12)

Rd 3: Ch 4, sc 3 (starting in 2nd ch from hook), sc 1, inc 1, sc 1, ch 4, sc 3 (starting in 2nd ch), inc 1, sc 2, ch 4, sc 3 (starting in 2nd ch), sc 1 in same st, sc 1, inc 1, ch 4, sc 3 (starting in 2nd ch), [sc 1, inc 1]*2 (18)

Crochet the forelegs (make 2)

Stuff with fiberfill as you go.

Crochet the belly in white

Join white yarn at the udder in between 2 of the 4 teats.

R 1: Ch 4, sc in next 3 ch (starting in 2nd from hook), sl st in next st of udder, ch 1, turn

R 2: Sc 2, inc 2, sc 2, sl st in next st of udder, ch 1, turn

R 3: Sc 3, inc 2 st, sc 3, sc 1 in next st of udder

This counts as the end of the round.

Crochet the body

Insert the safety eyes but don’t secure them yet.

Embroider the face with black embroidery floss

You can watch how I embroidered the face here in my video tutorial.

Embroider the nostrils with 2 to 3 diagonal stitches on rd 1 and 2 each.

Embroider the mouth with 4 small back stitches between rd 2 and 3.

Embroider the upper eye line with 2 short outer eyelashes.

Secure the safety eyes.

From here you crochet in rows:

R 13: Sc 2, sc 1 changing to brown, sc 3, dec, sc 1 changing to white, sc 1 changing to brown, sc 2, dec, sc 4, dec, sc 3, ch 1, turn (20)

R 14: Sk 1, [sc 5, sk 1]*3, sc 1, ch, turn (16)

R 15: [sk 1, sc 3]*4, ch, turn (12)

R 16: [sk 1, sc 2]*4, ch 1, turn (8)

R 17: [sk 1, sc 1]*4, ch 1, turn (4)

R 18: [sk 1, sc 1]*2, ch 1, turn (2)

Fasten off, leaving a long end for sewing.

Fill the head with fiberfill and pin it in on rd 20 to 23 at the front of the body. I attached it slightly tilted. Sew it on all around. Weave in the yarn end.

Crochet the ears in brown (make 2)

Rd 1: Sc 4 in magic ring (4)

Rd 2: [inc 1, sc 1]*2 (6)

Rd 3: [inc 1, sc 2]*2 (8)

Rd 4: [inc 1, sc 3]*2 (10)

Rd 5: Sc 10 (10) [skip this rd, if you want the ears to be smaller]

Rd 6: [dec, sc 3]*2 (8)

Rd 7: Dec 4 (4)

Fasten off, leaving a long end for sewing.

Crochet the horns in white (make 2)

Rd 1: Sc 4 in magic ring (4)

Rd 2: Sc 4 (4)

Rd 3: [inc 1, sc 1]*2 (6)

Fasten off, leaving a long end for sewing.

Crochet the tail

Ch 13 in white, sl st in next 12 ch (starting in 2nd ch from hook)

Fasten off, leaving a long enough end to sew on the tail.

Join the brown yarn at the tip of the tail.

Ch 4, hdc in 2nd ch from hook, dc 1, sl st 1

Fasten off and weave in the yarn ends.

Assemble

Sew the ears on the head with 4 rounds distance between ears and eyes, and 7 stitches distance between each other. Weave in the yarn ends.

Sew on the horns next to the ears, slightly forward and inward with 3 rounds distance to the eyes and 4 stitches distance between each other. Weave in the yarn ends.

Attach the tail at the back of the body between round 6 and 7, counted backwards from the last round on the back. Weave in the yarn ends.
