Pig Crochet Pattern

Hello, and welcome to the free version of this pig crochet pattern!

This is a great project if you want to crochet farm animals for little ones to play with. If you use the same yarn weight and hook size as I your pig will be about 11.5 cm/4.5” tall and 6.5 cm/2.6” long.

This pig amigurumi pattern comes with a free video tutorial that you can use for visual guidance. I also offer a PDF version of the pig pattern on Etsy and Ravelry and an interactive pattern on Ribblr that you can purchase for a small fee.

If you’d like ad-free access to the video tutorial AND the written PDF pattern with step-by-step photos of the process (plus 20+ PDF patterns for many of my previous projects), become a patron of Stella’s Yarn Universe!

Thank you for supporting the channel and allowing me to create more free crochet patterns!

About the pattern

Terminology

This pattern is written in American terminology.

Size

The pig will be approx. 11.5 cm/4.5” tall and 6.5 cm/2.6” long if using the indicated hook and yarn. If you want it to be larger or smaller, you can use a different yarn weight and adjust the hook size accordingly.

Construction

The legs are crocheted on the body. The ears, head and tail are sewn on. The nose and mouth are embroidered.

Techniques

This pattern will require techniques such as the magic ring, invisible sc decreases, and changing colors.

Tips and tricks

  1. You crochet in seamless spirals.
  2. Crochet as tightly as you comfortably can. This will ensure your amigurumi will have the right scale and no filling will show through any gaps. If you tend to crochet quite loosely, try using a smaller-sized hook.
  3. Have fun! In my opinion, crocheting shouldn’t be just about the result, but mainly about enjoying the process.

Materials and Tools

  • DK/light worsted or 4-Ply/Fingering yarn in light pink and beige [In the video, I used Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK in Ballet Pink (453) and Light Caramel (409) and in the written pattern, I used Scheepjes Catona in Sweet Mandarin and Caramel]
  • 2.5mm crochet hook / Size B-1 or C-2 depending on how tightly you crochet
  • Black embroidery floss
  • Fiberfill
  • Stitch marker
  • Yarn needle
  • Large-eyed sewing needle
  • Sewing pins
  • Scissors

Instructions

Crochet the Legs

The legs don’t need to be filled with fiberfill. You can use the yarn ends as filler.

Start the legs with beige yarn or whichever color you choose for the hooves.

Change colors with the last stitch of Rnd 2 to begin Rnd 3 with light pink.

Crochet the Forelegs (make 2)

Rnd 1: Beige: 8 sc in magic ring (8)

Rnd 2: In BLO: 2 sc, 2 dec, 2 sc (6)

Rnd 3 & 4 (2 rnds): Light pink: 6 sc (6)

Rnd 5: Inc ,4 sc, inc (8)

Rnd 6 & 7 (2 rnds): 8 sc (8)

Sl st in next st and fasten off.

Crochet the Hind Legs (make 2)

Rnd 1: Beige: 8 sc in magic ring (8)

Rnd 2: In BLO: 2 sc, 2 dec, 2 sc (6)

Rnd 3 to 5 (3 rnds): Light pink: 6 sc (6)

Rnd 6: Inc, 4 sc, inc (8)

Rnd 7: Dec, sc, 2 inc, sc, dec (8)

Rnd 8 & 9 (2 rnds): 8 sc (8)

Sl st in next st and fasten off.

Crochet the Body

Ch 10 in light pink

Rnd 1: Sc in next 8 ch (starting in 2nd), sc 4 in next ch, sc in other side of next 7 ch, sc 3 in other side of next ch (22)

Rnd 2 (see detailed instructions below or watch this part of the video): Sc in 8 st of first hind leg, sc in next 9 st, sc in all 8 st of first foreleg, sc in next 2 st, sc in all 8 st of second foreleg, sc in next 9 st, sc in all 8 st of second hindleg, sc in next 2 st (54)

In Rnd 2, you will crochet the legs on. I guide you through the steps of this round with the help of the images below.

The beginning of the round marks the back of the body. The color change on the legs marks the back of the legs. The hooves should face in the opposite direction when they are crocheted on.

Start single crocheting in one of the hind legs at the center of the inner leg.

This will ensure that the hoof faces forward. Sc in all 8 stitches of the hind leg.

Sc in the next 9 stitches of the belly.

Sc in the first foreleg, starting at the stitch at the back of the leg that is slightly inward-facing. Sc in all 8 stitches of the foreleg.

Sc in the next 2 stitches of the belly.

Sc in the second foreleg, again, starting at the stitch in the back that it slightly inward-facing. Sc in all 8 stitches of the foreleg.

Sc in the next 9 stitches of the belly.

Sc in the other hind leg, starting at the center of the inner leg.

Sc in all 8 stitches of the hindleg.

Sc in the remaining 2 stitches of the body. (54)

Rnd 3 to 5 (3 rnds): 54 sc (54)

In the next round, you will crochet the neck opening. The opening should be centered at the front of the body. Therefore, it is important to skip the 10 stitches that are centered in the front of the body. You may need to change the number of sc you make before and after the neck opening by +-3.

This is because we all have slightly different tension when we crochet, and if you are using a different yarn type or brand it might produce a slightly different result.

Rnd 6: (+-3) 21 sc, 10 ch, sk 10, (+-3) 23 sc (54) [See video tutorial]

Rnd 7: (+-3) 21 sc, 10 sc in BLO of chain stitches, (+-3) 23 sc (54)

Rnd 8: 20 sc, 6 dec, 22 sc (48)

Rnd 9: 48 sc (48)

Rnd 10: 3 sc, dec, [6 sc, dec]*5, 3 sc (42)

Rnd 11: [5 sc, dec]*6 (36)

Rnd 12: 2 sc, dec, [4 sc, dec]*5, 2 sc (30)

Rnd 13: [3 sc, dec]*6 (24)

Fill the body with fiberfill and continue filling as you go.

Rnd 14: Sc, dec, [2 sc, dec]*5, sc (18)

Rnd 15: [sc, dec]*6 (12)

Rnd 16: 6 dec (6)

Fasten off and close round.

Crochet the Neck [See video]

Join the light pink yarn at the side of the neck opening, in the stitch right next to the first skipped stitch (already crocheted in).

Rnd 1: 10 sc, sc in the stitch left next to the last skipped stitch (that is already crocheted in), 10 sc in the chain stitches, sc in the stitch in which you first joined the yarn (22)

Rnd 2: 22 sc (22)

Sl st in the next stitch. Fasten off, leaving a long yarn end for sewing.

Fill the neck with fiberfill.

Crochet the Head [See video]

Rnd 1: 10 sc into the magic ring in light pink (10)

Rnd 2: In BLO: 3 sc, 2 dec, 3 sc (8)

Rnd 3: 8 sc (8)

Rnd 4: [sc, inc]*4 (12)

Rnd 5: 12 sc (12)

Rnd 6: Sc, [inc, 2 sc]*3, inc, sc (16)

Rnd 7: [3 sc, inc]*4 (20)

Rnd 8: 2 sc, [inc, 4 sc]*3, inc, 2 sc (24)

Rnd 9 to 11 (3 rnds): 24 sc (24)

Rnd 12: Sc, [dec, 2 sc]*5, dec, sc (18)

Secure the last stitch before embroidering the nose and mouth.

Embroider the Nostrils and Eyes [See video]

Embroider the nostrils and eyes using an approximately 25 cm/10” long piece of black embroidery floss and a large-eyed sewing needle.

When embroidering, try to stitch through the fibers, not in between stitches. This way, you have more control over the position of the stitch because the thread doesn’t have room to move around.

Bring the needle from the inside out through the nose (on round 1), near the lower right corner.

Make a small vertical, slightly inward-pointing stitch for the first nostril.

Bring the needle back forward, close to the existing stitch and make a second vertical, slightly outward-pointing stitch to mirror the first.

Bring the needle to the side of the head on round 6, just above the center.

I left about 5 stitches space between the eyes.

From here, embroider a very shallow, upside-down V-shape for the first eye.

Then make a small stitch on the inside of the head at the midpoint between the eyes to carry the thread to the other side of the head. This stitch shouldn’t be visible on the outside.

Make another shallow upside-down V-shape on the other side of round 6 for the second eye. Tie the thread ends together inside the head.

Fill the head with small portions of fiberfill and with the yarn and thread ends.

Continue crocheting as follows:

Rnd 13: [sc, dec]*6 (12)

Rnd 14: 6 dec (6)

Fasten off and close the round.

Crochet the Ears (make 2) [See video]

The ears are crocheted in rows.

5 ch in light pink.

R 1: 4 sc (starting in 2nd ch from hook), ch, turn (4)

R 2: Sk 1, 3 sc, ch, turn (3)

R 3: Sk 1, 2 sc, ch, turn (2)

R 4: Sk 1, sc, ch, turn (1)

Now crochet around the ear, into the tip (row 4) and all three sides.

Rnd 5: 1 sc, 4 sc in the side of rows 4 to 1, 4 sc in other side of the base chains, 4 sc in the side of rows 1 to 4 (13)

Fasten off.

Thread the yarn tail on a yarn needle and go through the first stitch of the round.

Then go through the back loop of the last stitch of the round and weave the yarn tail down to the base of the ear.

Crochet the Tail [See video]

The tail is crocheted in one row.

7 ch in light pink.

R 1: 6 inc (starting in 2nd ch from hook) (12)

Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail for sewing.

Assembly [See video]

Attach the Ears

Pin the ears to the head on round 10, leaving about 5 stitches of space between them.

Sew each ear securely using both yarn ends, then weave the ends in and trim them close.

Gently fold the tips of the ears downward.

Attach the Tail

Center the tail on the rear of the body and pin it in place.

Sew the tail securely using both yarn ends, then weave the ends in and trim them.

Attach the Head

Position the head over the neck opening and pin it on.

Sew the head to the neck using the long yarn end, stitching around for a secure hold. Weave in the remaining yarn end and trim it close.
